ACP Reflection Paper
There are estimated to be about 30,000 in the Greater Philadelphia living with HIV/AIDS. HIV/AIDS is not an easy topic to get people to fight for. When conducting my ACP there were three major priorities I had to worry about. First planning the outline of my board for the health fair. Second creating my board for the health fair. Finally presenting my board at the health fair. “This is not going to be easy” is what i said when I first found out I have to do all that. Therefore I knew it was time to get started.
When planning the outline of my board I did not know where to start. But the proposal paper that was given to me really took a weight off my shoulder. However I found out if I just go back to my research papers the answers were there. The only thing I had to create was how can this impact the community. I figured if I changed people outlook on HIV/AIDS then we both could fight against AIDS and that's where wearing the ribbon came into place. Although I had all my information now it was time to create my board.
When creating my board for HIV/AIDS I knew that I could not have a mundane board. The topic I have is a popular topic so I knew my board had to be the same. As I created the board it took me two weeks to create the board it was hard work trying to get it together, I was actually ready to give up on my board. But when I brought my board into the school everyone said they liked my board so I just knew my hard work had paid off. However it was not over yet.
It was time to present my project. When talking about my board first I explained my background history, where HIV came from and when it first arrived in the United States. I gave information about the symptoms and transmitting the virus. Next I gave the answer to my essential question, I talked about the physical, financial, and emotional affect on a patient and family. Then I gave some statistics on HIV in the greater Philadelphia and also how there is over 1.1 million people living with HIV in the United States but only 25% of the people are virally suppressed with the medication, which means they are taking the medication and it is actually working and there is a low level of HIV in there body. Finally I tried to convince my guest that we should not look at people with HIV differently because they are human just like us and we need to come together and start a change by fighting against AIDS and it would start by us putting on the red ribbon.
The opinion I give on my ACP would be good, because even though I didn't do my own ACP and just did the health fair it still helped. First because I believe the mindset of people changed on the way they viewed HIV/AIDS. Also I believe more of the older kids will be more cautious about what they do because of the high rate of HIV that’s in their area. Also they all enjoyed my project they did not think it was boring and they like the fact I handed out the ribbons, but I also enjoyed creating the ribbons for the health fair. I believed AIDS awareness month do not just have to be in December we can celebrate it any month and push the awareness. But I do not like how somebody tried to tell on me and say I did not want to present project, because me getting a good grade is serious. However repeating my presentation so many times helped me remember my topic and essential question answers prepared me more for my presentation.
In conclusion completing my ACP was a great experience. Whether it was , first outlining my board for the health fair. Second creating my board for the health fair. Finally presenting my board in the health fair. It was fun educating the young and older kids on such great topics and sharing my opinion with them. Therefore I believe my ACP was a great success.
